Posted by Polina LaConte on Oct 12, 2015 10:57:26 PM

After getting her start as a young volunteer at the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships, Vail Valley resident Ceil Folz was recognized for her role in the development and promotion of skiing and snowboarding throughout the state of Colorado on October 2 at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort when she was inducted into the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

The event annually honors individuals and organizations and inductees are nominated and selected based on their contributions as an Athlete, Sport Builder, Inspirational or Pioneer.

Under Folz’s leadership, the Vail Valley Foundation achieved some of its greatest milestones in the organization’s storied 35-year history, including the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships. Folz oversaw the merger between the VVF and Vilar Performing Arts Center and later the Youth Foundation, the renovation of the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, the creation of the Bud Light Street Beat Concert Series, Honda Session and current annual athletic events such as Birds of Prey World Cup skiing, Mountain Games and the American Ski Classic as well as a collection of cultural offerings including the Vail Dance Festival. Folz also played a strategic role as Vice President, Operations during the highly successful 1999 Alpine World Ski Championships.

The Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame is managed by the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum. Located atop the Vail Village Parking Structure, the Museum is a treasure trove of ski history and heritage, with its six themed galleries displaying artifacts, narratives and film documentaries that entertain and educate visitors of all ages. Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn has taken great strides in her life to make Vail her home.

After finding success first as a Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athlete and then on the World Cup, she has had great support from Vail Resorts along the way, a company that has shown dedication to the sport of ski racing. But make no mistake, any resort in the nation would be happy to partner with the alpine star. In 2015, Vonn became the winningest female World Cup ski racer of all time, overtaking the record of 62 wins set by Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proll in 1980.

Notable Local: Jack Affleck

Posted by Polina LaConte on Oct 8, 2015 10:40:00 AM

Take a casual hike up Bellyache Road in Wolcott and you just might bump into the valley's premier jackafflec_bio_photophotographer, Jack Affleck. Affleck is a legend among snappers who see the many beautiful sights in Vail and think "I wonder if I could make a living off vistas like these."

Hike up Ptarmigan Ridge on Vail Mountain and you'll hit one of Affleck's hallowed grounds, the powder field with Mt. Holy Cross behind it. Rumor has it a lift was never built there just so Affleck would have a stash to shoot should the need arise.

Any visitor to the Vail area has see Jack's work throughout the valley and in national magazines.  And now you can purchase Jack's photographic art - great gift idea.
